Virginia Lee Meyer

Virginia Lee Meyer, 95, of Appleton, died on March 20, 2021 at Care Partners – Country Terrace. Lee, as she was known to family and friends, was born in Chicago, Illinois, on September 16, 1925, the daughter of William Grafe and Lucille Middlestadt Grafe. She is pre-deceased by her parents, her husband, Bob, and her brother Philip.

Lee’s cousin Elaine introduced her to Bob, a classmate at Elgin Academy in Elgin, Ill. Bob courted Lee under the watchful eye of her younger brother who didn’t want his sister to leave home. They married during World War II, and Lee was the love of Bob’s life for the 70 years of their marriage.

They raised their growing family for 25 years in Bob’s home town of Cincinnati and moved to Appleton in 1969. It brought Lee closer to her family living in the outskirts of Chicago making joyful and food-full family get-togethers easier. 

They loved to travel and although they preferred the car for exploring, a favorite long trip was Hawaii.

In the late 70’s Lee and Bob bought a log cabin in Northern WI which their children with a growing flock of grand-children visited in the summer.

Lee enjoyed reading, crafting, sewing and baking, especially cookies, a skill shared with daughters Sherry, Robin and Nancy. Her favorites were cut out cookies for different holidays and meringues that son Rich favored. Bob’s penchant for burnt cookies took care of the mistakes. She decorated the home for all holidays a habit passed on to all her children, but her most creative holiday was Christmas with decorations so elaborate that a child visiting asked if the house were a Christmas store.

Lee’s playful sense of humor, kindness and her deep love for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sister-in-law, niece and nephew and their children will be remembered by all who knew her.

She is survived by three daughters: Sherry (Michael) Herring; Robin (John) Pioch; and Nancy Meyer; a son, Richard (Joanne); 8 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law Stella; a niece Laura and a nephew Stewart; and cousins Jackie Gunn and Pat McDowd.

In keeping with Lee’s wishes, no funeral services will be held.
