Thomas Greenwood Obituary

Thomas J. Greenwood, age 87, of Freedom passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on November 14, 2019. He was born in Kaukauna on March 29, 1932, son of the late George R. and Helen (Madigan) Greenwood.

Tom married Jeanne Coffey on February 3, 1951, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Freedom, after being set up on a blind date. Tom started playing the organ at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Kaukauna in the 5th grade. That was the beginning of what turned out to be a lifelong passion of playing beautiful music on the organ. He started playing at St. Nicholas in 1951 and has played for hundreds of funerals and weddings. Tom played for the Freedom High School musicals and graduation for many years and played throughout the state at various supper clubs. He was truly outstanding.

Tom also dedicated many hours to volunteer organizations. He was a charter member of the Freedom Lions Club and was a very active member. He passed out countless dictionaries to kids in the Freedom School District through the club. His passion for airplanes and flying led him to also volunteer for over 20 years at the EAA. Tom was also a very faith-filled man, extremely proud to graduate from St. Norbert High School with the class of 1950. He loved his family dearly and enjoyed spending time with them, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Tom is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Jeanne Greenwood; 8 children: T. John (Nanette) Greenwood, Jim (Donna) Greenwood, Dan (Kathlien) Greenwood, Jeananne Greenwood, Bill (Julie) Greenwood, Julie (Al) Rooyakkers, Joanne (Pat) Paluch and Joe (Karla) Greenwood; 25 grandchildren: Erin, Jason, Nick, Ann, Jamie, Gina, Ashley, Jeremy, Anna, Toni, Bill, Evan, Jessie, Jon, Jenny, Adam, Abbi, Sarah, Stacy, Sally, Sandy, Josh, Brian, Kasey and Justin; 43 great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; siblings: Patsy Vanderloop, Peggy Vanevenhoven and Lawrence Greenwood; in-laws: Jean Maeder and Pat (Carla) Coffey; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, George R. and Helen Greenwood; an infant daughter, Mary Pat Greenwood; granddaughter, Katie Greenwood; great grandson, Linus Warpinski; siblings: George R. (Kathleen) Greenwood and Robert Greenwood; in-laws: Leon Vanderloop and Tom Vanevenhoven; and Jeanne’s parents, Herman and Marie Coffey.
