Theresa Verhagen Obituary

Our hearts were broken on March 12, 2023, when our precious mom, Theresa Verhagen (Pynenberg), passed away at her daughter Paula’s home in Sherwood where she resided for the past 3 1/2 years. She passed away peacefully with her family at her side. Theresa was born on March 22, 1931 in Little Chute, WI to the late Adrian and Leda Pynenberg. She married the love of her life, Paul Verhagen, on July 14, 1953. They shared 67 years of marriage and resided in Kaukauna their whole life until his death on February 21, 2020.

Theresa had a true love for life and enjoyed the simplest moments to their fullest. When you walked into her house she always greeted you with a big smile, would drop whatever she was doing and sit and visit. Theresa had so many gifts, but one of her strongest gifts was she was a great listener. When you were in the room with her you always had her full attention, like you were the only one there. She was patient, kind, caring, and easy going. Theresa cherished her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren most. She absolutely loved family gatherings, especially the holidays, and was famous for her delicious pies. She was proud to be a member of the homemakers most of her life. She loved going up to Paula, Ken and Jay's cottage on Pickerel Lake where she loved to fish, enjoy the sun, and just relax at the lake. Theresa was the most loving wife, mom, grandma, aunt, sister and friend and in return she was loved by so many. In addition to her family, Paula’s dog Audrey loved her most, being Mom’s most beloved companion for the last 3 1/2 years.

Theresa is survived by her children: Paula Hash, Jay Verhagen (special friend Judy), Keith (Lori) Verhagen, Ken Verhagen, and Sara (Pat) Weyenberg; seven grandchildren: Paul (Jolene) Verhagen, Laura (Randy) Schmidt, Sam (Emily) Verhagen, Rachel (Jake)Wittman, Anne (Micah) Wittman, John (Holly) Weyenberg, and Kate (Blake) Bentley; 10 great grandchildren: Noah and David Verhagen, Natalie and Mason Schmidt, Wade Verhagen, Colton Wittman, Grace and Samuel Wittman, and Danny and Archie Weyenberg. She is also survived by daughter-in-law, Chris Verhagen and brother, Dan (June) Pynenberg.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; her son, Joe; son-in-law, Dave Hash; her stepmother, Gen Pynenberg; her sisters: Bernice (Melvin) Strobel, Dot (Harry) Evers, Marion (Ray) Schroth, Rosemond (Wes) Schmitzer; brother, Norb (Rosalie) Pynenberg; step sister, Nancy (John) Schreiter; father and mother-in-law, Harry and Christine Verhagen; brothers-in-law: Joseph (in infancy), Joe Verhagen, Earl Verhagen, Richard (Blanche) Verhagen, Mark (Irene) Verhagen; sisters-in-law: Ruth (Ervin) Rosin, Leone (Fritz) VandeHey, and MaryJean (Gene) Van Lanen.

A special thank you to Dr. Greg Johnson and his staff at Kaukauna clinic for their never-ending care and compassion for mom over the years. Mom was always proud of being one of Dr. Johnson’s first patients. Also a special thank you to Promedica Hospice, for their support in mom’s last days.

A Funeral Mass and celebration of Theresa’s life will be held on Monday March 20, 2023 at 4:00 p.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 309 Desnoyer St. Kaukauna, WI, with Fr. Donald Everts officiating and Deacon Mark Ebben concelebrating. Visitation will be at the church from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, the family will make donations to a few of mom’s favorite charities.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our sister Paula for welcoming mom into her home during Covid without hesitation and taking the most wonderful care of mom.  She looked beautiful every day. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for giving mom such a loving home. She adored her room and loved living with you and Audrey. We will always cherish the extra time, and morning coffees we had with mom during these past 3 1/2 years. It was appreciated more than you’ll ever know. Love all your family.
