Robert J. “Casey” Vandenberg, Freedom, WI, age 92, passed away after a short illness on Thursday, June 18, 2021. Casey was born November 24, 1928 to Edward “Punkin” and Mary (Geurts) Vandenberg. He grew up in Freedom, attending Saint Nicholas Grade School and Freedom High School. Casey met the love of his life, Judith (Wright) in November of 1960. They were married on September 09, 1961 at Saint Joseph Church in Appleton, WI. Together they had three children, Kenneth, James and Kathleen. Casey retired from Badger Northland in 1992, where he served as Union President for nearly 10 years.
Casey was a founding member of the Freedom Volunteer Fire Department in 1956. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling and the Green Bay Packers. Casey adored his wife, sisters, children, granddaughters and great-granddaughters, and loved to spend time with them. Casey was a loving and carefree man who always put others first.
Casey is survived by his wife Judith, son Kenneth, daughter Kathleen (Joe) Tabaka and sister, Anna Mae (Vandenberg) Huss. He is further survived by granddaughters Allison (Ryan) Clark, Taylor Vandenberg and great-granddaughters Adelyn Mae and Harper, brothers and sisters-in-law Donald Huss, Jim (Sharon) Wright, Jeanne Wallace, Joyce (Tom) Wright, John (Kris) Wright, Jerilyn (Chad) Jahnke and Jeff (Meg) Wright. Casey leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Casey was preceded in death by his son, Jim, parents, Edward "Punkin" & Mary (Geurts) Vandenberg, sister, Elaine (Vandenberg) Huss, in-laws, Charles & Phyllis Wright and brothers-in-law, Emil Huss & Bill Wallace.
Casey’s family would like to thank Saint Paul Elder Care for the excellent care he received the last month of his life, Goddaughters Kristi (Huss) Wendt, Judy (Jager) Schmitt, and nephew Mark Huss, for always being there for him and bringing joy into his life. The family would also like to thank his barber, Bob Conrad for taking such good care of him through the years, and the Freedom Volunteer Fire Department. He was honored to serve alongside his fellow firefighters.
Visitation will be held Thursday, June 24, 2021 at Saint Nicholas Catholic Church (W2037 County Road S, Freedom) beginning at 3:00 PM until time of Funeral Mass at 5:00 PM, with a funeral dinner to follow in the Saint Nicholas Fellowship Hall. The Rev. Walter Stumpf will officiate with Deacon Gary Vanness assisting.
