Patrick Hurst Obituary

Our hearts break with the passing of our husband, dad, brother and friend Patrick Bryan Hurst on October 20th, 2021. He found peace surrounded by the love of his family.

He was born on October 4th, 1967, to Richard and Lila (Boettcher) Hurst. Pat was the youngest of six siblings who all grew up on Beaulieu Hill. He spent most of his childhood hiking, exploring, and playing in “The Hollow” with friends and relatives.

Pat met his lifelong love and best friend, Lisa (Look) Hurst at Kaukauna High School. They were married on October 16th, 1992. Together they raised two amazing children. They enjoyed traveling, visiting micro-breweries and maintaining a meticulous lawn.

Pat was fiercely committed to his family. He worked hard to provide a good life, and was so proud of his kids. Even with his hectic work schedule, he found time to volunteer for Little League, Destination Imagination and many other activities. Pat recently celebrated 25 years with UPS Freight, where he worked as a Driver. He loved driving - describing himself as a paid tourist. He enjoyed meeting people at various businesses, and seeing the beautiful Wisconsin landscape. He had an uncanny sense of direction and could find his way anywhere without a map.

Anyone who knew Pat remembers him for his outrageous humor, his outgoing personality, his many faces and voices. He was quite the character. He loved to meet and really get to know people. He also loved to give out nicknames. He genuinely cared. He didn’t talk about himself, and he always asked about others first.

He was also known for his love of music and could often be found sitting in a chair on the patio listening to Neil Young or Patsy Cline - as loud as the neighbors would allow. He passed on this love of music to his family and friends.

Pat is survived by his wife of 29 years Lisa (Look) Hurst; his loving children: Alex and Emma Hurst; family dog, Major; his fiercely devoted brothers and sisters: Vicki (Mark) Ott, Sandy (Jeff) Stumpf, Daniel (Karen) Hurst, Cathy (Glen) Hennes, and Mike Hurst; his father-in-law: Art (Marianne) Look; his brother and sisters-in-law: Karen (Pat) Rutten, Debbie (Paul) Verhagen, Jeff (Annette) Look and Mary Beth Look; as well as his many nieces and nephews. Pat was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Lila (Boettcher) Hurst, and his mother-in-law, Peg Look.

Per Pat’s request, a memorial scholarship will be established in his name at Kaukauna High School to benefit underprivileged students.

We are so thankful for the incredible kindness shown to Pat during his illness. Thank you to the team at ThedaCare Cancer Center, including: Dr. Chen, Rebecca, Nicole, Katie, and Beth; also thank you to the home care and hospice care teams, Tika and Lorraine. To all of the amazing nurses, including Eric from the fifth floor of ThedaClark. Finally thank you to our family and friends for their unending love and support.

Dad - thank you for showing me a little bit of everything. I’ll never forget all of the time we spent exploring Wisconsin together. I’m so proud of you and everything you ever did. I promise to get the oil changed in the car...when I remember to. It’s never goodbye, it’s see you later.

Love, Emma

Dad - you make me so proud to call you my dad. Your spirit, your voice, your humor, your love of music and your ‘short-arm shuffle’ all live on through me and I will cherish that forever. I made sure the lawnmower blade is secured and my new furnace filter works like a dream. “You gots it?! And I’m not gonna tell you again!” Until I see you again

. Love, your blue-eyed son, Alex

Dear - no more doctors, needles, scans, or tests. I love you and am so proud of you. I’ll miss you so much. Until we meet again - crank the tunes and save me a spot.

Love, Lisa
