Obituary

Freedom – Mary Ellen Sprangers, age 87, passed away peacefully with loved ones at her side on January 11, 2023. She was born on September 13, 1935, in Wrightstown, daughter of the late Henry and Petronella (Kerkhoff) Vande Hey. Mary married Leonard Sprangers and together they farmed and raised their family in Freedom. They milked cows and did all of the fieldwork together. The two of them never did anything without each other.

Mary loved spending time in her yard, she tended to her flower beds and gardens and canned many vegetables. She enjoyed sewing, crafting and playing cards. Mary was famous for her delicious homemade buns. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy and she loved to help take care of them and spend a lot of time with them.

Mary is survived by her children and grandchildren: Judy (Chris) Jordan and their children: Stephanie (Craig) Wildenberg and Kevin (Crystal) Jordan; Lee (Ann) Sprangers and their children: Nathan (Janelle) Sprangers, Ryan (Sara) Sprangers, Anna (Will) Van Rossum, Dan (Nikki) Sprangers and Amanda (Logan) Van Hoof; Sandie Nackers and her children: Tony (Cara) Nackers, Kyle Nackers and Cassie Sherman; Bev (Jerry) Van Elzen and their children: Jared (Amanda) Van Elzen, Katie (Jamie) Van De Hei, Ashley (Matt) Swanson, Sami (Brian) Behnke, Megan (Paul) Lund and Kenzie (TJ) Anstett; Shari (Mike Tisdale) Vandenberg and her children: Josh (Brenda) Vandenberg, Jackie (Derek) Lewin, Joe (Hannah) Vandenberg and Justin (Erika) Vandenberg; Wendy (Gary) Vander Heiden and their children: Brooke (Cole) Van Dreel, Maria (Brandon) Blochowiak, Olivia Vander Heiden and Sarah Vander Heiden; 44 great grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law: Sandy Vande Hey, Joe (Kay) Sprangers, Marge Van Stralen, Lorraine Kohl and Don Vanden Heuvel; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Sprangers; grandsons: Travis Vandenberg, Michael Vander Heiden and Kurt Nackers; sisters: Vivian (Ray) Eiseman, Marlene (Lawrence) (Leroy) Sprangers and Bernice (Art) Van Handel; brothers: Howard (Johanna), Ralph, Clayton (Lauretta), Gordon (Margaret), Roly (Rita), Mark (Florence), Mike (Murilla), Orville (Pat), Butch (Jean), Aloysius, Eugene, Dick (Beverly) and Virgil (Janet) Vande Hey; and several brothers and sisters-in-law.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2023, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, W2037 County Rd S, Freedom. Visitation will be at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. For online condolences, please visit www.verkuilenfh.com.
