Marlene Schmitz, age 79, of Appleton, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on January 23, 2018. She was born on October 23, 1938, daughter of Herman and Erma Giese. She was baptized November 20, 1938 and confirmed in May, 1952. Marlene graduated from Gillett High School and went to work at AAL. She married Richard Schmitz on September 27, 1958 at Immanuel Lutheran Church. After moving to Greenville, Marlene went to work at Outagamie Nursing Home and Farm. Dick’s job took their family to Kimberly where they built their first house. Marlene then worked at Kaukauna Hospital and later at Family Heritage Nursing Home.
In 1977 they bought and ran D&M Beverage Mart until 1987 when they moved to Minocqua. Many good times were had while they owned Tee Pee Campground on Lake Shishebogama right outside of Minocqua. In 1996 they moved back to Appleton.
Marlene enjoyed volunteering at church. She belonged to LWML since the 1960’s and held various offices in the organization. She also enjoyed camping, cooking and baking, quilting and most importantly, being with her family.
Marlene is survived by sons: Kenneth (Janice) Schmitz and Kebin (Kathy) Schmitz; a daughter, Karla (Curt) Sims; daughter-in-law, Peggy Schmitz; eight grandchildren: Rachel (Bill) Richards, Renee, Roxanne and Robyn Schmitz, Adam Schmitz (special friend Sophie Hanson), Megan (Ryan) Albrecht, Michael Sims, Kyle (special friend Kate Mish); four great-grandchildren, Erin, Ella and Eva Schmitz, and Atticus Sims; a brother, Herbert (Leah) Giese; two sisters-in-law: Gloria Schmitz and Lavonne Schmitz; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Marlene was proceeded in death by her husband, Richard; a son Kurt; parents, Herman & Erma Giese; father and mother-in-law: Raymond and Helen Schmitz; brother, David (Joann) Giese; sisters: Harriet (Melvin) Buchholz, Doris (Bill) Parmentier and Joyce (Herman) Wasmund; sisters-in-law, Adeline (Delmar) Nieland and Muriel (Ted) Huiting; brothers-in-law: Jerry Schmitz and Gordy Schmitz.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2018, at Faith Lutheran Church, 601 E. Glendale Ave., Appleton. Family and friends may gather at the church on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established.
