Mark "Moon" Mollen Obituary

Mark F. “Moon” Mollen, 74, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer, on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at home surrounded by his family.  Mark was born on June 3, 1949, to Emery and Zeta (Vandenberg) Mollen.  He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Barbara Van Dyke on March 7, 1970.

After his graduation from St John High School, he started his career at Thilmany Pulp and Paper in Kaukauna, WI where he retired as a millwright after 42 years of service.

Mark’s greatest passions in life were his family, hunting, and fishing. Depending on the time of year, it wasn’t always necessarily in that order. Many memories were created with family and friends at Mark and Barb’s cabin in Silver Cliff, his perfect “Getaway.” Mark enjoyed traveling south in winter to Texas with Barb, and he enjoyed numerous hunting or fishing trips across North America with his friends and family. As a younger man, he played on and managed a championship winning softball team and made life-long friendships with many of his teammates. Later in life, Mark enjoyed helping out at his son’s bar. Dr. Jekyll’s has never known a better doorman, and his absence will be felt by staff and patrons alike. Mark had a sharp wit and exuded charm, he could fix almost anything mechanical he could get his hands on, and he hosted the best fish fry you could ever have. Mark made an impact wherever he went, and he will be deeply missed by us all.

Mark is survived by his wife Barb, three children; Jason (Sheila) Mollen, Lake Tomahawk; Matt (Tricia) Mollen, Chicago; and Ben (Anna) Mollen, Appleton; grandchildren; Austin, Autumn and Jackson, siblings; Nick (Rita) Mollen, Kathy Ashauer, Steve (Deb) Mollen, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.  Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Barb’s parents (Erv and Jane Van Dyke) siblings Mike Mollen and Charlotte Mollen along with brothers-in-law; Tom Ashauer and Dan Van Dyke and the only hunting dog ever allowed in the house, Spike.

We can only imagine massive celebrations from the fish and wildlife in lakes and forests across the Midwest. They will not miss Mark like we will.

The funeral liturgy for Mark will be held on Friday, March 8, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church.  411 Vandenbroek St., Little Chute.  A time of visitation will be held on Friday from 3:00 p.m. until the time of the mass at church.  For online condolences please visit www.verkuilenfh.com.
