Marilyn Dorothy (Hilgenberg) Verkuilen , 79, passed away on Monday, November 7, 2022. Marilyn was born on September 16, 1943 in Appleton to John and Dorothy (Baier) Hilgenberg. She met Joe Verkuilen at a harness horse race and on September 9, 1967 she and Joe were married at St. John’s in Little Chute. She worked as a secretary in the Lower Mill office at Thilimany’s for over 40 years until her retirement in 2005 – she like to say that they sent new managers to be “trained” by her. In her younger years she was an avid athlete enjoying softball, bowling, volleyball and as a teen, she was a lifeguard at the Kaukauna pool. She loved to fish, and vacations up north in Crandon included many hours on the lake with Joe. Marilyn was always active especially in her church Immanuel United Church of Christ where she served as Council President, was active the Women’s Guild and Dorcas ministry group. She was on the organizing committee to celebrate IUCC’s 135th Anniversary in 2022. Marilyn was also an active volunteer in the wider community working with the JDRF, the Democratic party and especially with Church Women United of Outagamie County.
Marilyn is survived by her husband Joe, daughters; Tracey Marx, and Terri Verkuilen, beloved grandchildren; Luna Morgan and Erin Marx, grand dogs; Toby and Miles, sister, Hope (Hilgenberg) Moede, a brother, Richard (Teri ) Hilgenberg, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; Annamarie Hein, John (Carol) Verkuilen, Robert (Gloria) Verkuilen, George “Pork” Verkuilen, Jim (Sharon) Verkuilen, Dolores Schultz, Pat (Harry) Schultz, Beverly Bangart, Patricia Hilgenberg, Charlene Hilgenberg, Sharon Hilgenberg, Mary Mayo, and Francine Hilgenberg as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, a baby sister Donna, and brothers; Jack Hilgenberg, Tom Hilgenberg, Bob Hilgenberg, Steve Hilgenberg, Dennis (Annie Waitzman) Hilgenberg, Don (Barbara) Hilgenberg, and Frank Hilgenberg, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Merlin "Spike" Hein, Karl Moede, Frances (Wally) Verhagen, Diane Verkuilen, Alan Bangart, and Bruce Schultz.
The memorial service for Marilyn will be held on Wednesday, November 16, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Immanuel United Church of Christ, 510 Sullivan Ave., Kaukauna. A time of visitation will be held at the church on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service . For online condolences please visit www.verkuilenfh.com.
