Marilyn T. Verhasselt

Marilyn T. Verhasselt, age 89, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, January 4, 2026. She was born on July 15, 1936, daughter of the late Martin and Frances (Verstegen) Weyenberg. Marilyn was a woman of deep Catholic faith, a quiet strength in our lives, and someone who lived her beliefs through her actions more than her words. She married the love of her life, James, on May 29, 1958, and together they farmed side by side for 63 years—building a life rooted in faith, hard work, and love.

Marilyn was a loving wife and mom, a proud grandma, and a cherished great-grandma. Her strength was steady and gentle, and her love surrounded our family in ways that will stay with us forever. She will be dearly missed, but we find comfort knowing she is now at peace and held in God’s loving arms.

Marilyn is survived by her children and grandchildren: MaryJo (John) VerKuilen (Greg (Tonya), Andy (Dana) and Bill (Samantha)), Karen (Brian) Kust (Adam (Lindsay), Bobby (Kayla), Emily (Kyle) and Katie (Craig)), Nancy (Tom) Kozlovsky (Melissa (Ryan) and Sarah (Rob)), Donna (Bruce) Gonnering (Amber (Nate), Jared, Leah (Tom) and Allie), Ken (Crystal) Verhasselt (Derek (Mackenzie), Nicole (Colton), Chad (Carissa) and Carly), Mike (Marney) Verhasselt (Matt (Hannah), Jon and Lauren), Steve (Kelly) Verhasselt (Kylee (Chris), Colin, Caitlyn and Connor), Bruce (Vicky) Verhasselt (Markie, Brad and Kelsey), Jill (Nathan) Moore (Joe, Sam, Elise and Henry); 39 great grandchildren; sister, Janice Zwiers; brother, Jerry (Mary Ann) Weyenberg; in-laws: Karl Wouters, Dorothy (Ted) Vosters, Dolly Verhasselt, Fr. Dave Verhasselt, Terri Verhasselt, Pat (Bill) Brockman and Evelyn Verhasselt; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband, James “Butch” Verhasselt; parents, Martin and Frances Weyenberg; sister, Diane Wouters; father and mother-in-law, Isidore and Josephine Verhasselt; brothers and sisters-in-law: Richard Zwiers, Betty (Rich) Van Zeeland, Len (Betty) (Joyce) Verhasselt, Rose (Gerry) Vande Burgt, Joe (JoAnne) Verhasselt, Agnes (Clayton) Vande Burgt, Bob Verhasselt, Earl Verhasselt and Tom Verhasselt.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at Saint Nicholas Catholic Church, W2037 County Road S, Freedom.
