Our Sunshine Mom, Marie Susan Grundy gained her angel wings on Feb. 27, 2026 at the age of 86. She was a compassionate soul, a source of endless laughter, and the heart of our family.
Born and raised in Neenah by Arthur and Annamae Shepherd. Mom grew up on a farm with her siblings: Joan Pitsch, Dale, Tom, George, and Kenny. She lived just one road over from the love of her life, Eugene Grundy. They married in 1961 and built a beautiful life together. They were blessed with four children Susan, Kalen (Gary) Flaherty, Nancy, and Joe. Mom stayed home when we were growing up and one could say she had her hands full. She had the task of teaching us right from wrong and did so with a balance of love and grace. She had us involved in one thing or another like 4-H, sports, sewing, crafting, crocheting, band and many other endeavors. Through it all she was our biggest cheerleader, always present, always volunteering to help. She supplied treats to our teams, sewed banners to wave at events, and thanked our coaches for teaching us the importance of commitment and sportsmanship.
Mom gracefully transitioned from parent to best friend to all of us. She had the ability to be exactly who we needed at any point in our lives. Mom always put others first and taught us how to love each other and our neighbors unconditionally. She did kind unexpected things like surprising our dad with a puppy knowing it would mean more work for her, but she knew his love for animals ran deep. She knew Nancy had a golf addiction so dad and her learned the game so we could transition that time spend to family quality time. Sue being the oldest was the child of many firsts and this was a special connection Mom shared with her, they leaned on each other through thick and thin. That is until Sue went wild with her newly tuned polka moves, at that point Mom sat back and watched with a smile. She was also always up for one of Kalen’s sewing or craft projects. Learning and laughing until the project was successfully completed. Mom treasured her moments spent as a caregiver to her grandchildren in times of need for both Joe and Kalen. She provided the same loving support we had growing up. Family was everything to her and a celebration was planned every chance we could get because that brought family together and tied us closer with love & laughter. Mom taught us that the gifts God blessed us with were meant to be shared with others. We witnessed her allowing him to work through her which made her life so very meaningful. Mom also had some dear friends that added color to her life, Judy Selle, Jenna, Maryann Schiltz, Rosanne, & Carol Dietrich to name a few.
Mom rest easy knowing we will keep our promise to take care of each other especially Dad.
We will one day follow the string of love that tie our hearts together leading us back home to you. Grace, Amen.
