Margaret Ann (“Maggie”) Hohnberger, of Kimberly, age 81 passed unexpectedly at the hospital from sepsis following ankle surgery on Monday, March 16, 2026. She was surrounded by her loving family and a dear friend. She was born in Green Bay on June 19, 1944 to the late Betty Fellner (a single mother) who she eventually reunited with. At age 2½, she was adopted, raised and loved by her parents, the late John and Harriet (Van Dinter) Verbeten. Maggie married Karl Hohnberger at Holy Name of Jesus Parish on May 8, 1965. Maggie was a homemaker to raise her children, then served as a loan processor with Fox Communities Credit Union until retiring; she volunteered at Holy Spirit Parish in Kimberly. After Karl died in 2010, Maggie found love again and married Bob Lemoine on June 21, 2015 who died in 2019.
Maggie’s childlike faith, laughter, spontaneity and “can-do” spirit shined. She was deeply grateful her birth mother chose to give her a better life. She loved Jesus deeply and trusted Him through profound loss, including losing her parents at a young age and later two husbands. She had spunk, resilience, and more replacement joints than most people can name. She could turn a five-minute story into thirty (with every last detail included), and if you helped her with dishes or shoveling, you were going to learn the “right” way – the process was as or more important than the result. She saw the best in people, to a fault, yet always from genuine love and forgiveness. Her bond with her special needs nephew, David, was especially dear after her sister died. She cherished her role as “surrogate mom” to her Monday night soup group and for years enjoyed crafting for Country Christmas with good friends. She will be remembered for her unwavering faith, generous heart, love for family and friends, and the joy and sparkle in her eye she brought to every moment.
Maggie is survived by her children: Craig (Annette), Columbus, OH and Cheryl (Rich) Riffe, Appleton; grandchildren: Lauren (Brandon) Minner, Leah Hohnberger, Jake Riffe and Nick Riffe; step daughter: Becky (Dan) Rippl; best friend: Maria Kelderman; sister-in-law: Barb (Dale) Oliver; brother’s-in-law: Jim (Sally) Hohnberger, Dan (Judy) Hohnberger, Joe Ray; half-brothers: Earl, Rick and Gilbert Hughes; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends; beloved dog: Luci.
In addition to her parents, birth mother and both husbands, Maggie was preceded in death by her two unborn children; sister: Mary Lou Birling; brothers-in-law: Gary Hohnberger and Paul Birling; sister-in-law: Louise Ray; half-brother: Jeffrey Hughes; many cousins; and Karl’s parents Henry and Bernice (Wolfgram) Hohnberger.
A Funeral Mass for Maggie will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Spirit Parish, 620 E. Kimberly Ave., Kimberly with Fr. Carl Schmitt officiating. Visitation will begin at the church starting at 9:00 a.m. and will continue until the time of the Mass. Committal will take place in Holy Name Cemetery. As a special request, Maggie’s family would really appreciate you sharing a favorite or funny memory of Maggie in either the on-line guest book at www.verkuilenfh.com, or the memory box at her celebration of life.
