John G. Verkuilen, age 88, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on June 10, 2025. He was born on October 12, 1936, son of the late John and Anne (Van Schyndel) Verkuilen. John married Carol Belling on July 22, 1961, and she preceded him in death in 2024.
John worked at the Thilmany mill for 43 years before his retirement. He also served his country in the United States Army for 4 years. John was a dedicated member of the Kaukauna Lions Club, the Kaukauna Quarterback Club and the police and fire commission for over 30 years. He was an avid giver of blood, donating countless gallons over the years. John drove for Senior Wheels and enjoyed helping others that needed it, he would give time to anyone who was in need. He looked forward to his daily trips to the Y.M.C.A. and his many trips to Lambeau through the years as a long-time season ticket holder. John loved all sports, but especially any of them that his grandchildren were playing. He loved each of them dearly, and he shared a special bond with Bryce, attending weekly Mass and breakfast outings. Grandpa was all of the grandchildren’s biggest fan.
John is survived by his 5 sons: Craig (Gloria Strenn) Verkuilen, Steve (Jill) Verkuilen, Gary (Melissa) Verkuilen, Den Verkuilen and Doug (Michelle Immel) Verkuilen; grandchildren: Tanner, Bryce, Brock, Amber, Josh (Sarah), Nate, Anthony (Laura), Morgan, Mackenzie and Kendra, Preston, Alexis (Dylan); great grandchildren: Harper, Hadley, Braden and Addison; siblings: Robert (Gloria) Verkuilen, George “Pork” Verkuilen, Dolores Schultz, Pat (Harry) Schultz, Beverly Bangart, Joe Verkuilen, and Jim (Sharon) Verkuilen; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Carol; parents, John and Anne Verkuilen; sisters: Fran (Wally) Verhagen and Annamarie (Spike) Hein; in-laws: Diane Verkuilen, Marilyn Verkuilen, Bruce Schultz, Al Bangart, Bill Schultz and Al Belling.
The Funeral Mass for John will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 309 Desnoyer Street, Kaukauna.
