John B. Mongan, age 76, passed away on June 28, 2025, surrounded by family.
He was born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 24, 1948, to Lucille R. Mongan Oswald and the late John J. Mongan.
John spent his life as a dedicated and skilled diesel mechanic, retiring in 2010 after many loyal years with Penske. He believed in doing things the right way—no shortcuts. In retirement, he could be found in his garage with a wrench in hand, tinkering with engines, restoring old vehicles, or simply staying busy. He was a man of integrity and unwavering reliability, respected by all who knew him. John got along with everyone—and left a lasting impression. At the heart of John's life was his beloved wife and lifelong companion, Linda Mongan (née Specht). High school sweethearts for over six decades, John and Linda shared 59 years of marriage built on trust, commitment, and a lifetime of facing life’s ups and downs side by side.
He is survived by his loving wife, Linda Mongan; daughter, Shelley Kettleson (Tom); grandson: John (Courtney Eiting); son, Michael Mongan (Nicole); grandchildren: Kyra, Conner, Jacob, Trinity, Marianna, Joshua, Helena; granddaughter, Kayla St. Marie (Kyle); great grandchildren: Finley, Mosley, Crosby; brother, Tim Mongan (Wendy); sister, Dawn Frank (Harry); step-sister, Jan Marmon (Ron); brother-in-law, Charles Specht (Cindi); numerous nieces and nephews, and his beloved little companion, Chip.
John never missed an opportunity to lend a hand, offer advice, or slide under a car to help someone out. His grandchildren fondly remember his grease-stained hands, junkyard adventures, conversations over coffee, and the familiar way he greeted them.
In his final days, John was lovingly cared for around the clock by his daughter Shelley and sister Dawn, who remained by his side with unwavering love and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that you remember John with a smile and offer a prayer for his peace and for the comfort of his loved ones.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, July 10, 2025 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 119 W 7th Street, Kaukauna. Visitation will take place at the church on Thursday from 9:00 am until the time of mass.
As the patriarch of the family, John will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. He leaves behind a legacy of honesty and hard work.
In his own words, he offered a final send-off:
“It is what it is, I’ll see you on the flip side."
