Jerry “Gus” Selig, age 74, passed away peacefully at home after a courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, October 25, 2023. He was born on November 14, 1948 to the late Harry and Wilma (Schiefelbein) Selig.
Jerry married Carol Van Groll on July 10, 1971 and celebrated 52 years together. He loved the song “My Girl” and Carol was his girl. They were blessed with two children: Jamie and Jodi, who he taught a good work ethic and strong family values. Jerry was employed at Hoffmaster for 42 years retiring in 2009 when the plant closed. He drove truck for 37 years with a spotless record for the company. He loved fishing, especially with his brothers-in-law and his good friend, Butch Vandenberg. He also enjoyed perch fishing with Carol, Jamie, and Jodi. Everyone loved his fish fries. Jerry loved bowling and made many friends over the years. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed being up north with his nephew and great nephews. His greatest pleasure was spending time with his family, especially his beloved granddaughter Ava. He was the best papa and Ava will miss him dearly.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Carol; his children: Jamie Selig and Jodi (Rob) Rasch; granddaughter Ava; sister, Nancy (Dan) Gorell; brothers and sisters-in-law: Rich (Kate) Van Groll, Marge (Norman) Van Beek, Jerry (Janice) Van Groll, Mary Van Groll, Irene (Tiny) Wagner, Don (Beth) Van Groll, and Leroy (special friend Ann) Van Groll. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his mother and father-in-law, Henry, and Dora Van Groll; sister and brother-in-law: Joan, and Bob Pearson; brothers-in-law: Marvin and Carl Van Groll; nephews: Mark Van Beek, Andy Van Groll; special cousin-in-law Laverne Squier; and special uncle, Bob Schiefelbein.
A funeral service for Jerry will be held on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at 5:00 p.m. at Verkuilen-Van Deurzen Family Funeral Home, N3972 Columbia Ave., Freedom. Visitation will begin at the funeral home at 3:00 p.m. and will continue until the time of the service. Jerry will be laid to rest in St. Nicholas Cemetery.
