Gregory Karrels Obituary

SMS Gregory M. Karrels, age 67, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2025, at the VA Medical Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, after a brief, but courageous battle with acute myeloid leukemia. A proud resident of Appleton, Wisconsin, Gregory lived a life defined by service, loyalty, and love.

He was born on February 3, 1958, in Milwaukee, son of the late George and Marge (Chesner) Karrels. From an early age, Gregory was known for his sharp wit, steady demeanor, and unwavering commitment to others — qualities that would shape both his personal and professional life.

Gregory dedicated his life to public service; 27 distinguished years in the U.S. Military, beginning his journey in the Navy and later joining the Air Force, retiring with honor as a Senior Master Sergeant (SMS). His commitment to veterans didn’t end with his military service; for 32 years, Gregory worked as a skilled maintenance technician at the VA Medical Center in Milwaukee, supporting those who had served their country as he had.

He has been reunited in Heaven with his late wife, Tania Troncoso-Karrels. Gregory is survived by his beloved children, Jonathon (Erin), and Anamaria. He was also a devoted grandfather to Hailey, Madelyn, and Charlotte. Gregory also leaves behind his brothers Ken (Audrey) and Jim (Jane), along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members who cherished his presence.

In retirement, Gregory discovered a passion for creative projects and could often be found tinkering in his garage workshop. He loved exploring the world with his partner, Maria, and above all, treasured the time spent spoiling his grandchildren. Gregory’s quick-witted humor, warm laugh, and deeply rooted generosity touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Gregory’s life was one of integrity, service, and love. His legacy will live on in the many lives he influenced and the memories he leaves behind.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Gregory’s honor to organizations close to his heart:

Wounded Warrior Project, supporting the recovery of veterans

Fisher House Foundation, offering support to veterans’ families

• Donating blood to your local blood bank, giving others the gift of time, as others gave to Gregory
