Elizabeth “Betty” Appleton of Kimberly, age 93 passed away on Thursday, March 19, 2026. She was born in Neenah on November 4, 1932 to the late Francis and Martha Kersten. Betty married Robert “Bob” Appleton in 1960 . Betty worked at Bowlby’s Candy and loved making Christmas candy with her friends, teaching many the proper way to dip candy in chocolate. She had a deep faith in God and volunteered at Holy Spirit Parish in Darboy. Betty was a member of the St. Joseph Fraternity of the Secular Franciscan Order (OFS) in Appleton.
Betty is survived by her children: Mark (Diane) Appleton, Keith (LeAnn) Appleton; grandchildren: Jackson (Hailey) Appleton, Sydney (Jake Sprindis) Appleton; great grandson Charlie Appleton; sister Evelyn (Hank) Canterbury; brother Jim Kersten; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, Betty was preceded in death by her daughter Patty; father-in-law and mother-in-law; sister Joyce Kersten; brother and sister-in-law Bob (Maureen) Kersten.
Our family had the best of times camping with the Uitenbrooks and Linzmeiers. She enjoyed spending time with Mark and Diane up north. Jackson and Sydney also loved spending time with Grandma A and Mike and Betty Linzmeier up north. Sydney loved Grandma A’s sweaters and sweatshirts often wanting us to grab one for her. She will be remembered for sewing and was so excited Jake wanted her sewing machine. Jackson always looked forward to trips to the Dollar Store where she would let them pick something out for a treat.
Betty certainly loved playing cards with family and especially her friends at Hallmark. She often bragged about always winning, typically $.50-$.75. Cribbage and Sheepshead were favorite games for our family get togethers.
A Funeral Mass for Betty will be held on Wednesday, April 8, 2026 at 11:30 a.m. at Holy Spirit Parish - Darboy Church (W2796 County Road KK, Appleton). Visitation will begin at the church starting at 10:00 a.m. and will continue until the time of the Mass. Committal will take place in Holy Angels Cemetery at a later date.
