It is with great sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of Donald (Don) Edward Schend Sr., beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Don passed away on October 27, 2025, surrounded by loved ones after a short but courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Don was the fifth of six children of the late Charles and Margaret Schend. He graduated from Mary D. Bradford High School in 1961 and proudly served in the U.S. Navy for 22 years as an electrician. Following his naval career, he continued his service at Great Lakes Naval Station until retiring in 2000.
In the 1970s, Don shared his passion for music and marching as an instructor for the Americanos Drum and Bugle Corps. He was a founding member of the Scarlet Guard Color Guard in Appleton in the 1980s.
A lifelong Green Bay Packers fan, Don loved cheering on his team and sharing game days with family and friends. He also enjoyed staying active and busy—remodeling homes, woodworking, and helping others whenever he could. His craftsmanship lives on through the many birdhouses, clocks, and wood projects he lovingly created.
Don also worked for the Hortonville School District as a bus driver, where he became a favorite among students—especially when he dressed as Santa during the holidays. He spent time working in a hardware store and as a bartender, where his friendly nature and humor earned him many lasting friendships in the New London community.
He is survived by his loving wife, Cora; siblings Fran Webb and Richard(Georgia) Schend; his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; and many dear friends in both Wisconsin and Michigan. Don will be remembered fondly by his “second family” in Upper Michigan, where he spent treasured days hunting, boating, and ice fishing on Lake Gogebic, a part of him will always remain there.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Marilyn Christiansen; brothers Robert(Bob) Schend and Charles(Chuck) Schend Jr; his late wife, Rusty; and his great-grandson, Ryder.
Don will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His laughter, craftsmanship, and generous heart will be remembered forever.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at the Cruz Inn, 309 S Pearl St, New London, WI, beginning at 12:00 p.m., with Military Honors at 1:00 p.m. A committal ceremony will take place in the spring at Twelve Corners Cemetery.
