David A. “Big Dave” Vanden Berg, age 63, passed away unexpectedly at his home on April 12, 2023. He was born on August 14, 1959, son of the late Marvin and Shirley (Weyers) Vanden Berg.
Dave was a joy to be around, and brought laughter with him wherever he went. He loved just about everything Freedom, especially the football and wrestling programs. He made so many lifelong friends through the years during his involvement in both, and held them close to his heart. He coached many kids through the youth football program, and remembered them all. He was also a season ticket holder for his beloved Green Bay Packers.
Dave was a longtime volunteer with the Freedom Fire Department and served on the board of directors. He worked at the Kimberly Paper Mill for more than 30 years before its closing. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, and playing cards and dominos with his family and friends. Dave’s favorite thing was being “Papa Dave” to his two precious grandkids, Owen (6) and Maddie (4).
Dave is survived by his son, Brad (Jenn) Vanden Berg; grandchildren, Owen and Maddie Vanden Berg; brother, Dan (Charlie) Vanden Berg; sister-in-law, Deb Vanden Berg; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bill Vanden Berg. He told the best stories, gave the best advice, and you always knew what was on his mind. He will be forever missed.
