Carol Howen Obituary
Carol Ann Howen, age 87, passed away on May 30, 2026, surrounded by her family. She was born on July 28, 1938, daughter of the late Melvin and Marian (Verkuilen) Hopfensperger in Little Chute, WI. Carol graduated from St. John High School with a zest for life and love of God and later for family and friends that lasted until her death.
Carol loved to go camping in the northwoods. She also vacationed to Florida, which later led her to move there. She spent 12 years in Florida and then moved back to Wisconsin to be closer to family, especially her grandchildren. Carol was very active in the Eagles Club in both Florida and Wisconsin. She served as an outside guard and helped coordinate many fundraisers. She made many close friendships. Carol also was a nanny for several families through the years, those families were very good to her and she enjoyed that tremendously.
Carol is survived by her children: Rob (Sue) Van De Leygraaf, Keith (Missy) Van De Leygraaf and Julie Van De Leygraaf-Dake; daughter-in-law, Lisa Van De Leygraaf (Rupert); several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a step sister, Janet.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Marian; sons: Gary and Steve Van De Leygraaf.
Carol will be laid to rest next to her mother on Friday, June 12, 2026, at St. John Cemetery in Little Chute. There will be a graveside service at 3:00 p.m.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staffs at Edenbrook in Omro and Moments Hospice for the compassionate care given to Carol in her final days.
