Bruce Schmidt Obituary

Bruce W. Schmidt, age 63, of Freedom passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, January 8, 2024.  He was born in Appleton, WI on June 8, 1960, the first son of Thomas R. and Mary Ann C. (Rutten) Schmidt.  Bruce grew up in Appleton, and graduated from Appleton East High School in 1978.  After high school he followed in his father’s footsteps and took a job at Appleton Papers.  In 1987 he earned his commercial driver’s license through Fox Valley Tech and took a job as an operator for the City of Appleton Sanitation Department.  Bruce retired from the City in 2015, and moved to Cecil, Wisconsin where he took over his parents’ home.  The large property gave Bruce ample space to work the land.  He enjoyed gardening, mowing, and providing a beautiful property to make the greatest memories with his children, grandchildren, mother, siblings, nieces, nephews, and his friends.  In 2023 he purchased a cabin in the woods in Prentice, WI.  His family immediately started making memories with him at the new property.  Bruce was planning to move up there permanently in the summer of this year.  He enjoyed golfing, watching Brewers, Packers, Badgers, and Bucks games; he was an avid pool player, a pretty damn good one, actually.  He loved hunting, fishing, target shooting, camping, campfires, and cutting firewood.  Bruce loved his family dearly, and had a very special connection to all of his grandkids.

He is survived by his children:  Darrel (Krystal) Schmidt, Appleton; Rebecca (Trey) Green, Appleton; Brandon (Heidi) Schmidt, Black Creek; Brad (Krista Bouck) Schmidt, Menasha; Nathaniel (Alena) Tapelt, Kaukauna; his beloved grandchildren: Harmony, Zahriah, Brelyn, Harper, Amara, Avery, Cooper, Jaden, Leylah, Sierra, Trelisha; and a great-grandson, Kayden.  His sisters: Carleen Schmidt, Appleton; Linda (Dave) Arend, New Berlin, WI; Diana (Tom) Tapelt, Port Charlotte, FL; Bonnie (Len) Jastroch, Scottsdale, AZ; he had so many beloved nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Tom and Mary Schmidt; his little brother, Brian Schmidt; his nephew, James Schmidt; several aunts and uncles.

Funeral Mass for Bruce will be held on Monday, January 15, 2024 at 5:00 P.M. at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church (411 Vandenbroek St., Little Chute) with Father Ron Belitz officiating.  Friends will be received by the family at church from 2:00 P.M. until the time of service.  In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in Bruce’s name.  Online condolences may be placed at www.verkuilenfh.com.
