William “Bill” O’Kane, age 68, of Appleton, passed away on June 27, 2019, at ThedaCare Regional Medical Center, Appleton. He was born on March 29, 1951, in Iron Mountain, Michigan, son of the late William J. O’Kane and Alice (Wyosnick) O’Kane.
Bill graduated from Kingsford High School, Class of 1969. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, as a member of the Charlie Company 2/5th 3rd brigade 1st cavalry Air Mobile. After returning from the service, Bill worked at the Kimberly Clark mill in Niagara, WI, where he met and married Yvonne DePas, daughter of LeRoy H. and Cecelia (Kososki) DePas.
Bill worked for the Department of Defense at AMSA 51 from 1978-2009. He also dedicated his life to serving his community in any way possible. He was a member of the Army Reserves 377th maintenance co. in Manitowoc for over 20 years. Bill also served many years on the E. Kingsford and Town of Vandenbroek Volunteer Fire Departments. He was constable in the Town of Vandenbroek and also served 18 years as a Grand Chute Police Officer.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Yvonne M. (DePas) O’Kane; sons: Michael William (Wendy Seraph Lim) O’Kane and Patrick John (Tiffany Richardson) O’Kane; grandchildren: Elizabeth Marie, Owen William and Conner James O’Kane; a sister, Sharon (O’Kane) Schmeltzer; a brother, Richard (Mary Fike) O’Kane; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William and Alice; and a brother-in-law, Allen Schmeltzer.
Memorial services will be held at 12:00 noon on Monday, July 1, 2019, at Community Church of Appleton, 3701 N. Gillett Street, Appleton. Visitation will be at the church on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial is being established in Bill’s name for the Disabled American Veterans.
