Marjory Janis (Van Arsdall) Heathman

May 8, 1912 ~ January 21, 2015 (age 102) 102 Years Old

Marjory Janis VanArsdall Heathman, formerly of Marquette, MI, passed away peacefully at the age of 102 in Appleton, at Peabody Manor on Wednesday, January 21 with her children by her side. Marjory was born May 8, 1912 in Columbus, OH to the late Glynn and Florence (Anderson) VanArsdall. She moved many times as a child, eventually graduating from Washington High School in Washington Courthouse, OH in 1929. She attended Ohio State University for two years, studying geography, before accepting employment with the USDA, a job that would take her, among other places, to Washington DC where she attended Quaker meetings with then-President Hoover. While working in Milwaukee, she met her husband Harold (Hap) Heathman. They married in 1946 and moved to Marquette to start their family. Marjory retired from the US Forest Service in 1979. Hap and Marge were active members of the First United Church of Marquette, as well as many other local service organizations.  Marjory also attended Quaker meetings when possible and was a longtime member of the Marquette Reading Club as well as several bridge clubs.

In 2003 she moved for the final time to the Heritage Retirement Home in Appleton. She stayed active as an avid knitter, crossword puzzle solver and bridge player extraordinaire, and loved hosting friends and family for dinner and keeping up with college and national sports, particularly the Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers, and Ohio State.  Her affection, warmth, and chocolate chip cookies will be sorely missed.

In addition to her parents, Marjory was preceded in death by her husband, 4 sisters, 1 brother and her son-in-law. She is survived by her daughter Linda Millum, son Russell and wife Karen, grandsons Colin and wife Erin and Fritz and wife Corey, her granddaughter Michelle Millum, great grandchildren Leighton, Gavin, Henry, Carter and Claire and special niece Heather, as well as several other nieces and nephews and their children.

No public service is planned at this time.  Graveside services will be held this summer in Marquette.  Memorials in Marjory’s name may be made to the Salvation Army of Marquette at 1009 W. Baraga Ave., Marquette, MI 49855.
